Assessing
Microbial Safety of Drinking Water.
Improving Approaches & Methods.
OECD & WHO. April 2003.
Inadequate drinking water and sanitation
are amongst the world's major causes of preventable morbidity and mortality.
This book provides a state-of-the-art review on approaches and methods used in
assessing the microbial safety of drinking-water. It proposes a framework for
water safety based on risk assessment and risk management and supports the
rapidly emerging trend towards preventive management and a broad, system-wide
outlook. The book offers guidance on the selection and use of available
indicators alongside operational monitoring to meet specific information needs.
It looks at potential applications of 'new' technologies and emerging methods.
It is the outcome of a shared WHO-OECD initiative and provides background for
the development of the third edition of the WHO Guidelines for Drinking Water
Quality. Paperback, 295 pp.

Drinking Water
2002.
A Report by the Chief Inspector, Drinking Water Inspectorate.
Jeni Colbourne
(chief inspector), Great Britain Drinking Water Inspectorate, Department for the
Environment & Food & Rural Affairs. July 2003.
This is the Drinking
Water Inspectorate's 13th annual report which covers its activities during the
year 2002, and in particular the outcome of checks on the quality of water
supplied by the 26 water companies of England and Wales. There was a slight
improvement in drinking water compliance from 99.86 per cent of tests in 2001 to
99.87 per cent in 2002, including improvements in compliance with iron,
turbidity, nitrate and lead standards in water supply zones. This represents a
considerable improvement over the last decade, as the number of breaches of
drinking water quality standards in 2002 was 3,741 compared to 50,476 failures
in 1992. A companion report covering Wales alone is also available separately

Global Water Supply and Sanitation Assessment.
2000 report.
World Health Organisation
(WHO) & UNICEF. 2001.
This report is written for all those who wish to know the current status of global water supply and sanitation, presenting the findings of the fourth assessment of this sector. These findings will support future investment, planning, management and quality of service decisions. Key Features: Differs from previous reports, in that the methods used for assessment focus on users as primary sources of data, rather than on providers. This provides a more accurate estimate of the present state of water supply and sanitation around the world. It provides the baseline and monitoring methodology that will ensure reliable and consistent statistics, with which to report progress with confidence in years to come.

Water Quality Modeling.
A Guide to Effective Practice.
World Bank.
2001.
Surface water quality is a key to life, yet in many developing countries,
municipal and industrial pollution continues to pervade sources due to competing
demands on scarce resources. Elementary environmental controls are being
applied, but the optimal allocation of limited financial resources requires
sophisticated analytical approaches. This volume provides an introduction to the
latest analytical tools, specifically water quality modeling, used in
determining the quality of surface waters. Key features:
Illustrated through case studies of projects financed by the World Bank •
Presents a review of the state of water quality prediction models currently
available to the practitioner Provides a broad-based understanding of the water
quality prediction process and evaluates the merits and cost-effectiveness in
using water quality models under field conditions • Builds on and revises the
chapter on water quality modeling from the World Bank's Pollution Prevention and
Abatement Handbook 1998 (ISBN 082133638X). Paperback, 157 pp.
