Biodiversity Assessment - A Guide to Good Practice Review.
Department of the Environment. 1996.
Much has been said about conserving the world's biological resources. Some progress has already been made, and the United Kingdom, with its rich heritage of conservation and science has often been one of the countries in the forefront. This book has been written using world renowned expertise in the biodiversity field. The main authors are scientists from the Royal Geographical Society, the Natural History Museum, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. But many others have also contributed, making this manual a world class working tool. The manual will help those who wish to develop national strategies to conserve and make sustainable use of biodiversity in their own countries. It shows the resources available in the UK in terms of preserved specimen collections, living gene banks, bibliographical and archival resources, technical knowledge and the potential for training and transfer of technology and know-how. It is not intended to be international in coverage nor definitive in the techniques presented and reference is frequently made to more comprehensive works should the user want to pursue them. It will act as a guide of good practice for developing country and British scientists, both established and in training, who wish to collaborate in concerted action to implement the Biodiversity Convention. Climate Change and Stratospheric Ozone Depletion.
Early Effects on Our Health in Europe.
World Health Organisation (WHO). 2001.
People are concerned about the impact on their health of the climate warming and stratospheric ozone depletion that Europe has been experiencing for t and stratospheric ozone depletion that Europe has been experiencing for the last century. This publication attempts to clarify what early effects these environmental changes are having on our health, and what further effects they may have in the future. What is certain is that more frequent thermal stress causes illness and death, especially among the elderly; extreme weather events such as floods cause death, illness and material damage; some water- and food-borne diseases increase during extreme weather conditions; malaria could increase with climate warming; and ozone depletion increases skin cancer and weakens the immune system. While much is still uncertain about the precise relationship between changes in the climate and changes in disease patterns, the need for action is clear: action either to reduce the climate change itself, or to reduce its harmful effects. Contents: Introduction • Climate change in Europe • Effects on health of climate change in Europe • Health effects of stratospheric ozone depletion • Early effects of climate change on human health • Action to reduce the health effects of climate change • Conclusions. Paperback, xii + 116 pp.

An Insight into the Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems.
United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization (UNESCO) & the Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS). Nov 2002.

OECD Agricultural Outlook 2003-2008.
OECD. Aug 2003.
Now in its 9th edition, this publication analyses how global and domestic forces are shaping agricultural markets and products over the medium term, and highlights the risks and uncertainties that may influence the agricultural outlook up to 2008. Findings include that continuing global economic weakness, compounded by drought-induced production adjustments in some countries, and government support policies are conditioning market outcomes in the near term. High initial crop prices and low livestock prices are expected to converge as production adjusts with the break in the drought, and an economic rebound and strengthening demand should lead to increased trade and firmer prices over the projection period to 2008. Topics discussed include the role and influence of government policies on farmers' decisions, as well as the likely market effects of developments such as the US Farm Act and of an enlarged European Union. Paperback, 209 pp.

The State of Food and Agriculture 2002.
Agriculture and Global Public Goods Ten Years After the Earth Summit.
FAO. Oct 2002.
The FAO's annual report on current developments and issues in world agriculture, this publication monitors the global agricultural situation as well as the overall economic environment surrounding world agriculture. This year the report includes an overview of the status negotiations on agricultural trade following the launch of a new round of multilateral trade negotiations by the World Trade Organization. An overview of the current agricultural situation by main regions in the world, both developing and developed, is presented, with discussion of current issues of importance for agriculture in the various regions. Agriculture, fisheries, and forestry, if properly managed, can provide a series of benefits to large sections of people - benefits such as landscape conservation, watershed protection, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem stability. Some of these so-called public goods are global in nature; they benefit all or large sections of humanity. This year's report discusses some of these global public goods and calls for increased international financial flows towards agriculture and rural areas in order to promote their provision. It also examines one of the possible new mechanisms for this financing: the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) deriving from the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Included in this issue is the SOFA 2002 CD-ROM, containing time series data for 150 countries, country groups and regions in English, French and Spanish, together with FAOSTAT TS software to ensure easy access and use. Paperback, 227 pp.
