Application of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing in River Studies. Edited by R.S.E.W. Leuven, I. Poudevigne and R.M. Teeuw. 2002. Geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing are emerging tools for river research and management (e.g., assessments of flooding and sedimentation processes, vegetation dynamics, landscape changes and ecological risks, as well as the integrated multi-disciplinary studies required for river management). The book describes the background, goals and results of an intemational workshop on the application of geographic information systems and remote sensing in river studies, organised by the universities of Nijmegen, Ronen and Hertfordshire. it is not designed to be a textbook on the technical aspects of GIS and remote sensing, but it fills a niche in novel applications of these tools in river science. It is part of a triptych of books in the aquatic sciences series of Backhuys Publishers, which covers the scientific concepts, approaches and tools within the landscape and ecological system domain of river research and management. This domain focuses on the structure and functioning of riverine ecosystems. By their very nature, riverine ecosystems are very dynamic and relatively inaccessible to humans: remote sensing has proved to be an invaluable tool for measuring and mapping riverine ecosystem and landscape features. The combination of remotely sensed data with GIS may provide synoptic information on the structure and functioning of riverine ecosystems and the spatial pattem of riverine landscapes (fragmentation, connectivity); offering new opportunities to study and manage their dynamic character and multiple scales of organisation. The book aims to (1) publish the experiences with novel applications of geographic information systems and remote sensing in river studies; (2) disseminate the results of the case studies in river research and management. The papers are arranged in four sections, (1) introduction and methodological framework, (2) applications of remote sensing, (3) GIS applications and (4) discussion and state of the art. In addition, the book contains an author index and a detailed subject index, with references to definitions and descriptions of relevant notions, acronyms, concepts, approaches, methods, techniques and study sites. The target group contains people interested in research and management of lowland river basins (scientists, students, policy makers, water managers). viii + 247 pages, 89 (13 col.) figs, 24 tables, paperbound. The Central Amazon floodplain: actual use and options for a sustainable management. Edited by W.J. Junk, J.J. Ohly, M.T.F. Piedade & M.G.M. Soares. 1/2001. The book presents in 24 chapters a coherent analysis of the ecological situation, the history of land occupation, the different forms of resource utilization, the socio-economic situation of the population, and the ecological threats of human activities on the Amazon floodplain. Cost-benefit analyses of different forms of land use are compared with market demands and environmental impacts. Conflicts of interest between different stake holders (e.g., smallholders and ranchers, professional and subsistence fishermen) are described. A chapter about environmental legislation and its deficiencies points to the need for additional regulations to avoid further conflicts of interest and negative impact of human activities on the ecosystem. This is the first book that deals with sustainable management of a tropical wetland with coherent and new data sets in an interdisciplinary approach, along with a strong conceptional background. Therefore, it is not only of interest of the sustainable management of the Amazon River floodplain, but it serves as a conceptional basis for the sustainable management in general. xxvi and 590 pages with 59 photographs, 57 line drawings and 114 tables. Canada. S.
Parker and M. Munawar (Eds)
11/2001. This book is an
unique collection of 18 invited contributions from various experts on specific
topics. It is the first time that
a monograph of this type has focused on the conservation and protection of a
protected area.
The diversity of topics and themes contained in this book will attract
specialists, managers, environmentalists, park rangers, students, the general
public and other readers since the content, although scientific in nature, is
simple and interesting. Fathom Five National Marine Park is a source of beauty,
inspiration and motivation. It is a place where research is able to pose
questions on cultural heritage, native biodiversity and anthropogenic stress.
Most importantly, it is simply a venue where a rich diversity of life, culture,
and nature merge and integrate in harmony. The editors hope that this monograph
will appeal to a variety of users as a source of knowledge, information and
state-of-the-art technology for the assessment of Canadian as well as other

Ethiopian
Rift Valley Lakes. Tudorancea, C. & Taylor W.D. (Eds). 2002. The origin
and the limnology of the Ethiopian Rift Valley lakes have received less
attention from scientists than some of the larger lakes further south. Despite
the fact that these lakes are of great importance to the economy of Ethiopia,
and are critical to the survival of local communities, there were no intensive
and extensive limnological studies on these lakes until recently. It became
obvious that the Ethiopian Rift lakes can serve as a natural laboratory for
comparative limnological studies due to their unique chemical, physical and
ecological features. They also proved to be very sensitive indicators of past
and recent climatic changes that took place in this particular area of eastern
Africa. Recently, several excellent books have synthesized the available
information in the areas of geomorphology, climatology, and limnology of African
Great Lakes, but very little information has been synthesized on the Rift Valley
lakes of Ethiopia. Since significant limnological data have accumulated on the
Ethiopian Rift Valley lakes, but these data are spread out in various
publications, many of which are not readily accessible to the international
scientific community, a book to synthesize most of this literature is necessary.
It is hoped that this book will stimulate the interest and curiosity of many
limnologists around the world. The various chapters will provide a comprehensive

Freshwater Meiofauna: Biology and Ecology. Rundle, S.D., Robertson A.L. & Schmid-Araya, J.M. (Eds). 2002. The first section of the book gives indepth accounts of the systematics, morphological characteristics, life histories and ecological requirements of the main freshwater meiofaunal taxa (i.e. microturbellarians, rotifers, gastrotriches, nematodes, water mites, microcrustaceans and tardigrades). The second section then takes an integrated approach to review the current state-of-play in meiofaunal ecological research in freshwaters, addressing important issues, such as the importance of meiofaunal taxa in the trophic dynamics of freshwater ecosystems and the process underpinning the distribution patterns observed in meiofaunal assemblages. This book should appeal to a wide range of freshwater scientists, including novices in the study of freshwater meiobenthology and established researchers in freshwater ecology, for whom the meiofauna represent an unopened “black box". Our ultimate goal is that this book will serve to promote the idea that the zoology of freshwater habitats concerns more than just fish, macroinvertebrates and microbes. xvi and 370 pp., 65 figures, 28 tables, hardbound. Guide to Tropical Freshwater Zooplankton. Identification, Ecology and Impacts on Fisheries. Edited by C.H. Fernando. 10/2002. This is the first comprehensive book on Tropical Freshwater Zooplankton. It covers the whole spectrum of Tropical Freshwater zooplankton and includes the non conventional group, the Ostracoda. One chapter is devoted to miscellaneous groups like Chaoborus, Hydracarina, Protozoa and some others that occur from time to time in freshwater zooplankton. Another chapter, on the interactions of zooplankton and fisheries, should make the book more useful to tropical fish culturists and fishery biologists. The authors of the chapters on the different groups of zooplankton and fisheries are authorities in these fields They have also collaborated with the leading researchers in the field from all continents and this work has benefited from input of both younger scientists and senior collaborators working closely with the authors in laboratories worldwide. This book should be of use to a wide variety of freshwater biologists, both beginners and those already working in the field for some time. There is much material that is relevant and up to date, some of it that is not familiar to many students in the field. The literature coverage is designed to give a wide perspective of research in the field without attempting to be exhaustive. Key references are included so that the user can access almost all the literature in the field but with special reference to the tropical region. This book should be on the shelf of individual workers in zooplankton and especially in laboratories where work on freshwater ecology and sytematics of the fauna is being carried out. Libraries should have a copy available as a general reference for freshwater biologists. Researchers and students of freshwater zooplankton, fishery scientists and fish culturists in tropical regions will benefit from this wide-ranging book.xvi and 292 pages with 121 plates (1119 figures) and 10 tables, paperbound. Responses of Plant Metabolism to Air Pollution and Global Change.
edited by Luit J. De Kok & Ineke Stulen, 1998. This volume
contains the invited and contributed papers of the international Symposium on Responses of
Plant Metabolism to Air Pollution and Global Change held in Egmond aan Zee, April 1 - 5,
1997, which was the fourth in a series. The previous symposia were held in Oxford, U.K.,
1982, n Munich, Germany. 1987 and in Blacksburg, U.S.A., 1992. The fundamental mechanisms
underlying the physiological response of plants to air pollutants and global change have
gained renewed Interest, following the present developments in molecular biology. This
volume contains a balanced view of the current ideas and the recent research developments
on the impact of inorganic and organic gaseous pollutants, elevated CO2, and climate
change, and their interaction, on plant functioning. In addition to the biochemical and
physiological aspects the genetics and molecular biology of plant responses are discussed.

Review of Northwest Pacific Epitoniids (Gastropoda: Epitoniidae).
(Monographs of Marine Mollusca No. 6). Taisei Nakayama. 2003.
After gathering many data on the specimens and references, some
great misunderstandings or misidentifications were corrected, and some new
species were described to complete this study. However, due to some urgent
project on Japanese molluscs by Okutani (2000), the new species were
unfortunately reported to ‘Venus’ shell magazine in 2000, previous to the
publication of this book.
This study is based on the review of North Pacific Epitoniids in 1996-1998 and
includes some minor changes since then. One new species is introduced in this
work.Contents: Geography in this publication (Figure 1); Rejected Records not included in this publication;

Directory of Crustacea Copepoda of Inland Waters. I. Calaniformes. Dussart, B.
& Defaye, D. 2002. The first edition of this directory was published almost 20 years ago. Since
then, numerous new species have been described, some genera and families have
been revised, and new synonymies and updated keys have been published. These
changes have all been incorporated into this second, amended, English edition of
‘Répertoire mondial des Crustacés Copépodes des eaux intérieures,
tome 1: Calanoida’.
The contents are organized as in the previous edition. The references cited in
the taxonomic part are given in alphabetical order, and the abbreviations of the
references follow the ISO-4 standards (ISDS, 1985 and following years). The
scientific index includes the synonyms in Roman characters, which allows the
reader to follow the trail of any citation to its present valid name. For each
genus, the typespecies is given first and is marked by an asterisk; the order
followed for the other species is chronological. For each species, a synonymy is
given, followed by other specifying citations or references on morphology,
physiology, biology, or ecology of the species; distribution is also given. The
8 families treated are:
Aetideidae, Clausocalanidae, Centropagidae, Pseudodiaptomidae, Acartiidae,
Sulcanidae, Temoridae, and Diaptomidae (the most widely distributed family in
inland waters). All species described from 1898 until 2000 are included. This is
a definite reference work for all those involved in copepod research. vii and 276 pp., paperbound.
