The Universal Encyclopaedia of Sciences and Arts, was a monumental, uncompleted German encyclopaedia of which 167 volumes were published from 1818 to 1889. It was begun by a German bibliographer, Johann Samuel Ersch, who began work on it in 1813. 168 vols., consisting of sect. I (A - G), vols.1-99; sect. II (H - Li), vols. 1-43; sect. III, vols. 1-25 (O - Ph) and 1 suppl. with copper plates to sect. I, vols. 1-14; 1818 erschien in Leipzig der erste Band des heute kurz "ERSCH-GRUBER" genannten größten deutschsprachigen Lexikons.
